The Municipal Theatre of Piraeus presents the play “The Killer, Crime and Acquittal,” the new work by Vasilis Katsikonouris, directed by Pygmalion Dadakaridis, on the Main Stage, beginning December 8.
A shocking story of femicide that marked post-war Greece comes to life this year on the stage of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus through Katsikonouris’ new work “The Killer, Crime and Acquittal.” The production is directed by Pygmalion Dadakaridis.
The play is based on true events that occurred in August 1960 in a village in Ilia. The confessed murderer, who killed his wife because she had an extramarital affair, was unanimously acquitted by the Mixed Jury Court of Patras, as it ruled that he “acted in a state of intense emotional turmoil and confusion.” Almost the entire village testified in his defense. The local community not only refused to condemn him but welcomed him as a hero who had “restored his honor.”
Vasilis Katsikonouris, whose family origins are from the area where these events took place, uses this case as the foundation of his new play “The Killer, Crime and Acquittal,” to explore and expose the dark and terrifying mechanisms of Greek patriarchy—mechanisms that persist to this day, with even more alarming consequences.
The play attempts a deep dive into the core of this dark social cell, beyond obvious and self-evident condemnations.
A bold theatrical work that touches the open wounds of then and now, illuminating with disarming truth the violence, guilt, silence, and the need for catharsis.
